So I'm going to Austin this week. This will be my first time there. Where should I go for dinner? What should I check out? I'll actually be in Round Rock, but I will be flying into the airport, so I'll be going by the city on my way in. I want to go somewhere I can't go when I'm home....somewhere unique to Austin. I'll really only be able to check things out after about 5:00 pm though because I will be there for work.

Any help?

I really liked the Magnolia Cafe, so that's probably what I'd recommend.

I'd be really disappointed if Austin didn't have like, the best Steak House on the planet..
Outback Jacks.

I'll look into it. What kind of place is it?

I will hit up that place, since I can't get to Franklin's BBQ. Plus there is one in Round Rock a few miles from my hotel.

Also hit up Home Slice Pizza. We've gone to visit relatives in Austin a few times and OHMYGODTHATPLACEISSOGOOD. They apparently ship their water from New York City to Texas to make the dough so you get the proper New York style taste.

Meh, pizza is just pizza. Stick with tacos and BBQ if you want something Austin.

I live in Round Rock!

On highway 79, there is little red wagon burgers. They have great burgers and breakfast tacos.

In Georgetown, monument cafe is great.

Chuy's is an Austin original, but it is really crowded unless you go at 2. Torchy's tacos is decent.

If you are in Austin on a Saturday, look up the location of the Chi'lantros food truck. It is Korean Mexican infusion, and delicious.

If you like Korean food, go to Korea House on Anderson in Austin.

My friends that immigrated from Korea say that Korea House is the most authentic Korean food in the US.

If you like good burgers, Hopdoddy's is good, but also crowded.

Fogo de Chao in downtown Austin is also great, but extremely expensive.

Will you be downtown at all, or just stuck in south Dallas? Unfortunately, I'm leaving for SF tomorrow afternoon-wed night, but if you're still around when I'm back I'd be happy to show you around.

It's got a little of everything, really, hard to explain. Very tasty organic food.

Agreed, but Home Slice is in one of the most Austin-y parts of town (South Congress) to walk around and hang out. If none of the food trucks look good or Gueros/HopDoddys is too busy, Home Slice is a great choice.

Its open 24-hours, great for after hours eating. A similar kind of restaurant is Kerbey Lane which has a north location.

Exactly my point— there's so much more in S Congress/S 1st that's way better than pizza. Hell, even Guero's is better than pizza, and it isn't even good.

You can get a pretty good steak (Flemings or Roaring Fork come to mind) but I bet you can get better in Dallas or Chicago.

I was sort of joking, but when I visit America, especially Texas I'd really want the stereotypical tourist trap cowboy steak house deal.

If the waiters aren't wearing 10 gallon hats and spurs, with steaks that start at 16 oz, and the doors to the restrooms are the swingy saloon type then I'm walking straight back out.

and I want fries that come with fireworks.

Ha ha, you'll find that restaurant in Las Vegas long before you find it in Austin :) This is an Austin restaurant:

It sucks you can't make it to Franklin's. I sacrificed a morning to wait in line, and it was 100% WORTH IT!

If you're staying in Round Rock, get breakfast at Round Rock Donuts. They have easily the best donuts I have ever had!

Another place I highly recommend is Pluckers for wings. My girlfriend hyped the place up for 3 years, and it lived up to the hype the first time around. The Hallelujah sauce is the best sauce I've ever had!

I won't really be downtown. I may go through on my way to Round Rock on the day I get there, but I guess I'll see what happens. I'm only there Tuesday evening through Friday morning. Short trip this time.

I'm hoping to get down that way at least one evening. Are the food trucks worth checking out?

I won't be there on Saturday, but all of those sound good to me. Hopefully I get to check out some good places while I'm there. No reason to sit in the hotel all night, right?

I would go to franklins if I could, but I don't get to town until like 4 tomorrow, and my flight leaves at like 11 on Friday. The other two days will be spent in meetings.

That may be where I stop for dinner tomorrow night. I'm thinking of trying to get to a concert too if I can. It looks like Suicidal Tendencies is playing on Thursday night at The Mohawk. I've never seen them live, so I may do that. I love live music.

Also check out round rock donuts for breakfast. Great donuts, but don't eat to many because you might feel like shit for the rest of the day.

Just buy two and leave. And if you do eat too many, the amazingness of the donuts is worth feeling like shit later in the day.

Willie G's downtown makes an amazing steak. Flemming's is also amazing. If you just want a good steak, any Outback will do.
